In short

An AI bot on Telegram reads what customers write in their own words and answers like a well-briefed employee: it checks availability, quotes a price, takes a booking, writes it into your CRM and hands anything that needs judgement to a person. A classic button bot cannot do that. It walks people through a fixed menu and stalls the moment someone types a real question.

Telegram gives you three places to put such a bot: a standalone bot with its own username, a bot connected to a staff member's personal account through Telegram Business that replies on their behalf, and a Mini App with a full catalogue inside Telegram. Which one fits depends on where your customers already write.

This guide is for businesses whose customers live on Telegram. That is first of all Uzbekistan, where it is the default messenger, and the many companies in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and the wider region that run Telegram next to WhatsApp.

The example running through it is a small tour operator in Samarkand that sells day trips and multi-day tours to foreign travelers and local families. Inquiries come in English, Russian and Uzbek, bookings sit in a spreadsheet and a CRM, and two managers answer from their personal Telegram accounts. The company is invented; the inbox is realistic.

Why Telegram, and where

In a Central Asia Barometer survey, 70% of people in Uzbekistan named Telegram as the messenger they use most, against 18% for WhatsApp. In Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan the order is reversed. So a business in Tashkent or Samarkand gets most of its chats on Telegram even if its website shows a WhatsApp button.

For the tour operator, inquiries peak in the evening and on weekends, often from travelers in other time zones. By morning there are thirty unread chats, and a third of those people have already booked with someone who answered first.

Three ways to put AI on Telegram

A standalone business bot

The classic setup. The bot has its own username, the customer taps Start and writes. The bot receives messages through the Telegram Bot API, sends them to a model together with your catalogue and rules, and replies. You can put its link in ads, on a booking confirmation or in your channel description, and a start parameter in the link tells you which campaign the customer came from.

The catch: a bot cannot start a conversation. Until the customer writes first, the bot cannot reach them. That is a Telegram rule, not a setting.

A Telegram Business bot

Many customers do not write to a bot at all; they message a manager directly. Telegram Business lets the account owner connect a bot that reads incoming messages and replies on their behalf in the chats they choose. The owner sees a bot control bar in each managed chat and can take over at any time.

What the documentation says matters in practice:

  • only one business bot can be connected to an account at a time;
  • since Bot API 10.0 in May 2026, connecting one no longer needs Telegram Premium;
  • the bot can reply only in chats that had an incoming message in the last 24 hours, and only with the rights the owner granted: read, reply, delete, edit the profile.

This turned out to be the main channel for the tour operator. Repeat customers and their friends message the manager Jasur directly, and nobody wanted to push them to a new bot. The business bot answers at night in the customer's language and, during the day, prepares drafts Jasur sends with one tap.

A Mini App

A Mini App opens a full web page inside Telegram: tour cards with photos, dates, a booking form. The AI helps in the chat, while browsing happens in a normal interface. It is worth building once you have dozens of products and people would rather scroll than ask.

What the bot handles and what goes to a person

The bot takes the simple, checkable work:

  • tour descriptions, prices, what is included, pickup points;
  • availability for given dates, from the booking sheet;
  • a suggestion based on a vague request: "two days, kids, not too much walking";
  • collecting names, dates and contacts and creating the deal in the CRM;
  • standard questions about payment, cancellation and what to bring;
  • a payment link and a confirmation once payment arrives.

A person takes:

  • group and corporate requests, custom itineraries, discounts beyond the rules;
  • complaints, refunds, anything that went wrong on a trip;
  • questions the catalogue and rules do not answer;
  • any customer who asks for a human.

The handoff should be honest: the bot tells the customer a manager is joining, and the manager gets a card with the request and the history. We cover the same pattern for WhatsApp in how AI answers customers in WhatsApp.

How the bot is built

Four parts sit behind the chat.

  1. The model. We default to OpenAI or Anthropic models, both officially available in Uzbekistan according to the supported-country lists of OpenAI and Anthropic. The final choice comes from tests on your own conversations, not from leaderboards.
  2. Knowledge. Catalogue, prices, availability, cancellation rules. Live data is read from your systems when the question comes in, not from a file uploaded last month. How retrieval keeps answers grounded is explained in how RAG reduces support load.
  3. Actions. Create a deal, hold a seat, generate a payment link. Every action has limits: the bot cannot give a bigger discount than allowed or cancel someone else's booking.
  4. Logs and tests. Every reply and action is recorded, and before any prompt or model change the bot is run against a set of real conversations with known good answers.

English, Russian and Uzbek in one inbox

The tour operator's customers write in English, Russian, Uzbek in Latin script, sometimes Uzbek in Cyrillic, and often mix them. Models handle Uzbek less well than Russian or English, so language gets its own test: a hundred real messages in every variant, checked for where the model goes wrong. Voice notes arrive as files; the bot transcribes them and replies in text, and transcription quality is tested the same way.

Telegram limits you meet after launch

  • No cold outreach. You cannot message people who never started the bot. Repeat sales only work with customers who already did.
  • Sending speed. Telegram's bot FAQ advises no more than one message per second to a single chat and about 30 messages per second overall. A broadcast to 20,000 customers takes minutes and needs a queue.
  • The 24-hour window for business bots. A Telegram Business bot can reply only where the customer wrote in the last day. A reminder about an abandoned booking three days later is out.
  • 20 MB downloads. Through the standard Bot API a bot can download files up to 20 MB. Long voice notes or videos may need your own Bot API server.
  • Payments. Digital goods and services sold inside Telegram must be paid in Telegram Stars. Physical goods and real-world services go through payment providers, and in Central Asia the bot usually sends a link from a local payment service and listens for its confirmation.

Bot builder or custom agent

If all you need is a five-button menu and answers to ten fixed questions, a bot builder on a monthly plan is enough. A custom agent pays off when answers depend on live availability, a CRM and business rules, when customers write in several languages, and when you need a record of what the bot decided. The longer comparison is in bot builder vs custom AI agent.

A three-week pilot

  1. Week 1. Export two or three months of chats, tag the common questions and the cases that need a person, connect the catalogue and the booking sheet.
  2. Week 2. The bot works in draft mode: it writes, a manager checks and sends. Mistakes go into the test set.
  3. Week 3. The bot answers on its own at night and on weekends and stays in draft mode during the day. Measure the share of chats closed without a person, time to first reply, and bookings from after-hours chats.

Our Almaty Marathon support agent follows the same pattern and closes about nine conversations in ten on its own. If you want a Telegram agent for your business, see how we build AI agents and AI for sales.

FAQ

Yes. The bot receives messages through the Telegram Bot API and passes them to an OpenAI model or another one. A working business bot also needs your catalogue and rules, a CRM connection, a handoff to people and a log of answers.

Yes, through Telegram Business. You connect one bot to your account and choose which chats it may handle. It can reply only in chats where the customer wrote in the last 24 hours.

Not to connect a bot: since Bot API 10.0 that works without a subscription. Some features of the business account itself, such as business chat links, are part of Premium.

Current models understand Uzbek, but less reliably than Russian or English. We test Latin script, Cyrillic and mixed messages on real customer chats before launch and pick the model by the results.

Digital goods and services inside Telegram are paid in Telegram Stars. For physical goods and real-world services, the bot usually sends a payment link from a local provider and confirms the booking when payment arrives.
